Kate Mitchell is a filmmaker, director, choreographer, sculptural couture artist, collagist, and the author of Fashioning Women. She recently completed her first film, GOLDEN, which was shown at thirty-two festivals in the United States, Canada, Europe, UK, South America, and Australia, and won ten awards. She has begun work on a new film, PANTHEON (working title), with expected completion spring 2024. Originally a contemporary dancer in New York, she performed with CoDanceCo, a repertory company, in the works of Mark Morris, Bill T. Jones, Ohad Naharin, and Doug Varone, and with the Rosalind Newman Company. She later founded Kate Mitchell & Dancers in San Francisco. She has presented dance/theater performance events at ODC and SOMarts theaters, as well as pop-up events in Union Square and nearby department stores in San Francisco. These projects include dance events Terrain, Spirit House, Chocolate Box, and Threads -and the dance/theater/fashion show Fashioning Women, which also premiered the eponymous book. Mitchell's collage and sculptural couture have appeared at the San Jose (CA) Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and in gallery shows at DZINE Gallery and the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco, the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley, CA, and the Abrams Claghorn Gallery in Berkeley, CA. All of her works are multidimensional layerings connected by humor, introspection, irony, and passion. “Color and texture, beauty and strangeness, and the expressive power of the human body all excite me, and shape my passion for expressing the contradictions and incongruities of growing up female." She frequently collaborates variously with cinematographers, choreographers, composers, costume designers, dancers, lighting designers, and photographers. Mitchell is a graduate of New York’s High School of Performing Arts (now La Guardia School of the Arts), holds a BA in American Studies from Yale University, an MA in Dance from UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, and completed fashion and design courses at Parsons School of Design, New York City, and Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA. In 2010, SF Weekly named her a “San Francisco Mastermind”. |
